HOME > Trolleys, Buses and Cabs
Once you are in Virginia Beach, you will find all the major car rental agencies, limousine services, buses, taxis, trolleys and convention shuttle services to accommodate your every need. By far, the most convenient way to get from place to place at the oceanfront if you do not have your own car is on our trolleys and electric hybrid mini buses.
“The Wave” is what we call our Trolley and Shuttle system in Virginia Beach. We may sometimes generically refer to it all as a “shuttle system” so don’t be confused by the terms. It’s all a part of the same Hampton Roads Transit System (HRT).
Depending on the route that you are taking you will either ride a Trolley or a Shuttle (mini-bus) .
The Trolleys are only located at the oceanfront on Atlantic Avenue. You will feel like you’ve stepped right in the 1950s. Riding this little slice of nostalgia is a fun and inexpensive way to sightsee and make your way around the beach area. Kids will love to ride on The WaveTrolleys just for the fun of it! Super reasonable fares!
Shuttles and mini-buses are used for the other non-oceanfront routes.

It’s a fun way to see the resort area and it sure beats having to find parking near the boardwalk!
The HRT (Hampton Roads Transit), which runs the Wave, also operates the Paddlewheel Ferry, another slice of nostalgia, which takes you from Portsmouth to Norfolk and back. For more information on the Paddlewheel Ferry, as well as tours of the Norfolk Naval Station, go to www.gohrt.com.
Cabs are also abundant in Virginia Beach. It’s not like New York city with a cab passing by every few minutes. Usually you will have to call a local cab company to meet you at a location and at a specified time in order to have them take you to your destination. Since the oceanfront is only 40 blocks long, if you have the energy (and the time) you can usually get to where you need to go by foot. However, if you want to explore further inland, definitely hail a cab and they will take you anywhere you want to go at a very reasonable price!
Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) provided over 18 million passenger trips in FY15 to people in Chesapeake, Hampton, Norfolk, Newport News, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach. Have a question about our service, or need assistance reading maps and schedules, contact HRT Customer Relations at (757) 222-6100.
* Persons with disabilities or Medicare cardholders pay less for any fare or pass. Youth may also pay less than full fare on certain services. Have an ID ready, and ask before you pay. *
(Note: Eating and drinking are not allowed.)
