Grommet Island Park

100 Atlantic Avenue Virginia Beach, VA 23451

757-385-1100

Region: Oceanfront South (1-10), Virginia Beach

Description

Grommet Island Park is no regular beach park. In fact it is America’s first 100% handicap accessible park to make certain that every”BODY” can enjoy the beach. The inspiration for this state-of-the art park came from the personal struggles the Thompson family had regarding their son Josh Thompson. Josh a young surfer from Virginia Beach who in late 2006 at the age of 33 was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. When his family went to the beach, Josh always stayed behind. Josh’s father, Bruce Thompson figured this nightmare must have been plaguing many disabled folks all over the world.

So now it is a reality in Virginia Beach. This way every"BODY" can enjoy the beach. It's also one of the best beach parks for kids and is a hit with families from all over.

This playground on the beach is great for kids! Let them play while you enjoy the rest!
