The Steel Pier Classic is a professional and amateur surfing contest located in Virginia Beach, VA. It is produced by the Virginia Longboard Federation (VLF), a 501 C3 non profit organization that aids the community through surfing endeavors. The VLF gets together every Memorial Day Weekend at the best surfing destination in Virginia Beach, affectionately known as The Jetty to promote the art of longboard surfing. Through the efforts of this organization, The VLF has generated a dynamic surfing contest that is a fun, family atmosphere for people to enjoy from all over the country. The name of the contest is derived from the Virginia Beach Steel Pier, which was located at the Va. Beach Oceanfront’s very own First Street, circa the 1960’s. Historical references indicate that the roots of East Coast surfing were born at our very own Steel Pier, in Virginia Beach.

Steel Pier Classic

The Steel Pier Classic is the largest longboard event on the East Coast. However, it is not only longboarding; it is comprised of a variety of events—nose riding, retro surfboarding, tandem, stand up paddleboard (SUP), and Pro/Am surfing divisions. All of the events encompass the soul of surfing and the heart of the Virginia Beach surfing community. It allows different generations of surfers to come together, and allow the art of longboarding to prosper to a higher level. This year a shortboard division has been added to round out the surfing event.

There are expected to be approximately 400 competitors participating in the Steel Pier Classic.

Virginia Beach Surf Art Expo

From this growing surfing event, The Virginia Beach Surf Art Expo has evolved. Surfing is a sport, but it’s also an art form. The culture of surfing has stimulated surf artists for many years. The Steel Pier Classic and Virginia Beach Surf Art Expo embraces the art of surfing in every form — whether it’s observing the sport of surfing, or featuring surf artists along the Va. Beach Boardwalk who create the art of surf on canvas, carvings, film, jewelry, or craftwork.
