With the longest pleasure beach in the entire world, it is no surprise that Virginia Beach in the US state of Virginia is a tourist destination attracting visitors from all around the world. There is 35 miles of coastline to explore and surf and plenty of sand to relax on for beach goers.

The beach isn’t the only great aspect of the city. There are a variety of attractions and places to visit. From shopping resorts to museums and nature reserves. What are some of the best things to do in Virginia Beach?

Day Trip to Jamestown

If you are fascinated by the history of the United States then Jamestown is a very intriguing place to visit for some sightseeing and learning, it is where the English first colonized the US and is just one hour’s drive from Virginia Beach.

If you plan to go here then a night’s stay at the Williamsburg Inn will give you a little more time to explore the area in more depth. Williamsburg Inn is an old colonial hotel with a luxurious spa and is one of the best places to stay in the area.

While here, you can take a nice refreshing walk through the old town and get horse and carriage rides while exploring the old buildings. There are also lots of traditional Irish pubs to stop off at for a drink or bite to eat. Alternatively, Culture Cafe is a great lunch stop and has the best cheese curds that aren’t to be missed!

Gaming enthusiasts will find a variety of arcades and entertainment centers throughout Virginia Beach. While there are currently no physical casinos in the area, those who enjoy online casino gaming will find plenty of options available to them here.

The Boardwalk

In Virginia Beach itself, you can take a walk along the boardwalk and enjoy the great variety of high quality bars and seafood restaurants. Oscars Oceanside is a great one to try or Orion’s rooftop restaurant has breathtaking views. You might even get the chance to see dolphins from here.

For lunch, Chicks on the Beach is a fun casual stop great for a speedy lunch and has many southern classics available.

Back Bay Nature Reserve

Established in 1938, Back Bay nature reserve gets you away from the hussle and bustle of the city. You can see local wildlife, including coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, opossums, and deer.

Or for a sporty adventure you can kayak on the water. The reserve is open from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset every day.

⁠Virginia Aquarium

Home to sand tiger sharks, otters, turtles, jelly fish and much more. There is something for everyone to enjoy at the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, from boat tours and virtual reality pods to interactive science activities and ziplining.

Boardwalk Resort and Villas

One of the grandest hotels and spas in Virginia beach, built in the 1920s, this hotel has plenty of history. It is the ideal location for surfers as it is just steps away from the boardwalk and oceanfront.

There are an array of exciting activities at this resort, from wine tasting to kids crafts and metal detectors. Live music events take place regularly and there is a highly recommended ice cream parlor just across the street. This resort is also a luxury wedding destination.

Marriott Virginia Beach Oceanfront Resort

This grand hotel is home to Orion’s Asian fusion restaurant with the best sushi and gorgeous views of the ocean. The venue is located just off the north end of the famous boardwalk.

One of the best features of this hotel is the outdoor pool which overlooks the boardwalk and the ocean. It also has a well stocked outdoor bar and great live music events throughout the summer.

For long distance travelers, you are just 20 miles from Norfolk airport and 100 miles from Richmond International.

Whether you are a keen surfer looking to catch some waves, or an inquisitive traveler looking to learn more about Virginia’s history, there is something for everyone at Virginia Beach, and plenty of great places to stay too!
