Although Virginia Beach is best known for sun, sea, and surf, it’s also a golfer’s paradise. In fact, you’ll find as many as twenty one golf courses in and around Virginia Beach, thirteen public and five private. Whether you’re interested in playing a casual round with friends or family, or you’re a pro looking to take your skills to the next level, Virginia Beach’s golf courses offer tees to suit all levels, as well as abundant natural beauty.
Red Wing Lake golf course
The brainchild of prolific designer George W. Cobb and first opened back in 1962, Red Wing Lake golf course is a public, 18-hole course that offers excellent golfing along with serene lakeside views. The course has been thoughtfully designed with all the greens recently reshaped and reseeded to add beauty and character, as well as improve drainage. Bent grass fairways are bordered by striking loblolly pines, while lakes and natural wetland areas with multiple tees make this course a fun (and decidedly beautiful) challenge. There’s also a variety of tees to suit golfers of all skill levels.
Carts and clubs are available to rent, or you can opt to purchase equipment from the on-site golf shop. A reliable golf cart, in particular, can be a huge help on the course. Golfing is a highly-demanding skill and walking an 18-hole course is the equivalent of running three and a half miles and burns a whopping 2,000 calories. With a golf cart to take you from hole to hole, you can conserve your energy and focus on improving your game. Electric golf carts are also a great alternative to standard gas ones as they’re quiet and easy to maneuver over hilly terrain. Plus, going electric also eliminates the need for oil changes, which makes life even easier.
Princess Anne Country Club
Princess Anne Country Club is ranked in the top 25 golf courses in the world under 6,000 yards long by Golf Magazine. Since there are only six courses from the U.S. included on the list, that makes Princess Anne one of the best in the country. First built in 1923, and redesigned in 2007, the course is truly stunning and offers beautiful ocean views. New and experienced players alike can enjoy a variety of games that suit their individual skills and abilities. Although the course may be shorter than usual, it’s also fairly narrow, so hitting the ball straight becomes a fun challenge. The staff members are even PGA professionals who’ll be on hand to provide you with tips on how to sink the perfect putt.
Kempsville Greens
Kempsville Greens is a gorgeous 18-hole championship course that dates back to 1957. The course features plenty of fairway bunkers that add an extra layer of challenge to your game, while lakes at certain holes also add beauty and interest. The course also showcases lovely yet somewhat narrow Bermuda fairways, which means errant balls are at risk of hitting the water — all just adding to the fun. Kempsville Greens is a fairly short course overall, spanning just under 6,000 yards from the back tees, which makes it a great choice for amateur players and families looking for a casual, low-pressure game.
Virginia Beach is home to no shortage of beautiful golf courses suitable for all levels of skill and ability. Whether you’re a serious golfer looking to work on your game or simply planning a fun family day out, you’re bound to find the perfect course for your needs at Virginia Beach.
