Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Situated just south of Virginia Beach, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a pristine sanctuary spanning over 9,000 acres along a narrow coastline. This refuge is home to a variety of wildlife, including beaches, dunes, woodlands, maritime forests and freshwater marshes.

Visitors can take peaceful walks through this natural setting and embark on trails including the scenic Bay Trail that winds through these habitats. There is plenty of opportunity to spot an array of wildlife including bald eagles, ospreys, turtles, deer, and migratory birds that make this refuge their home.

First Landing State Park

First Landing State Park is a true haven for nature enthusiasts, making it one of Virginia’s most-visited state parks.  Stretching 2,888 acres, the park showcases the area’s picturesque landscapes of lush forests, rolling dunes, and tranquil waterways.

Hikers are treated to a number of trails, including the Bald Cypress Trail which meanders through a captivating maritime forest. As you make your way through the park, keep a lookout for river otters, white-tailed deer, and an array of beautiful bird species which are dotted around the park’s diverse ecosystem.

False Cape State Park

Tucked between Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the Atlantic Ocean, False Cape State Park is another must-see destination that offers a unique wilderness experience. This secluded coastal gem is one of the few undeveloped areas remaining along the Atlantic coast, boasting pristine beaches, maritime forests, and expansive dunes.

Nature lovers can explore the area’s walking, hiking, and biking trails and can also embark on the scenic East Dike Trail, where they might come across wild horses, loggerhead sea turtles, migratory waterfowl, and other wildlife that call this unspoiled paradise their home. The ideal place for young adults to explore, Virginia Beach also offers a range of accommodations including  Hotelicopter.com, making it the perfect weekend getaway or Spring break.

Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center

For those seeking a closer connection with marine life, the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is the perfect place to visit. The center offers interactive exhibits and engaging educational programs that allow visitors to delve into the diverse marine life of the region.

The aquarium also offers excursions such as dolphin-watching boat tours with knowledgeable guides where you can learn about coastal animals like sea turtles, sharks, river otters and unique fish species.
