Q: Why are tents allowed on the beach?

Added Details:

Too many tents on the beach obstruct the view for many. Enclosed tents should be prohibited. Only canopies should be allowed. Furthermore people sleep in the tents between the hours 8am to 8pm is prohibited. I quit going to VA beach because can't see the ocean for the tents.

Hi Stomber,

Since we did not write with the Virginia Beach City Codes and Ordinances, unfortunately we cannot answer that question to a degree that would accurate and 100% correct.

Our best guess is that tents/canopies provide shade and protection from the elements (sun UV rays, heat, wind, sand, water spray, etc..) just like an umbrella would.  A family of 4-6 people with infants, handicapped members, elderly members or even members with skin sensitivities may find it hard to protect themselves and others in the family adequately simply by using an umbrella or other small shade.  For some of these people it may be their first time visiting a beach.  For others, such as elderly visitors, it it may be their last.  Allowing them to visit the beach and be protected from harm is the intent of the codes and ordinances.

In other words, Virginia Beach allows tents, canopies and other small shades (less than 10 x 10) so that people can visit the beach and be comfortable while they visit the ocean.  Not having to worry about severe sunburn or other beach health related issues for other family members who might be at risk is a good thing for those families afflicted with such issues.

While many families use the tents, canopies and other small shades effectively and are in need of it, others do not and as with many things in life, it gets taken advantage of.  Sleeping on the beach after hours is prohibited whether you are in a tent or not.  Enforcing those codes and ordinances is the job of local police and beach patrols.  Unfortunately, there are too few of them to catch all violations.

While  tents or canopies may pose a visual impedance or visual nuisance for some while they vacation, the rewards and safety measures it provides people at risk outweigh any harm it may do to other beach-goers.

The beach is a big place.  Our recommendation would be to find a spot with fewer tents and canopies.
