Q: I would like to launch a Chinese Sky Lantern at the conclusion of my wedding ceremony, which is on the beach. Is that allowed?

Asked by: Adrienne T.

A:

Hi Adrienne,

Originally we thought that this would fall under the “open flame on the beach” legality question that we get all the time. Open flames are not permitted on any beach in Virginia Beach.  However, we then began to wonder is a permit could be obtained for somthing like this for a special event like a wedding.

The deeper we looked, the more restrictive it got.

According to the following website, sky lanterns are banned in over 29 states.

Virginia is one of thoise states.

We are sorry to inform you but it looks like a sky lantern ceremony would be considered illegal for your wedding.
