Q: Can I launch a kayak on the beach?

Added Details:

I am staying on 47th Street and we have a kayak that I want to use in the ocean.

Asked by: Carrie A.

A:

Hi Carrie,

Kayaking is permitted and is regulated with the same hours as surfing regulations at the Virginia Beach oceanfront.

Kayaking is allowed before 10am and after 4pm Mon-Fri.

On the weekends the hours are before 10am and after 6pm.

In addition, you must stay 10 feet away from all swimmers.

The rules and times mentioned above are for the highly populated areas of the beach at the oceanfront (1st – 40th street)

The farther you go north on the beach (above 40th street) the patrolling and monitoring of the beach is not enforced as there are no lifeguards on duty there.  You would most likely be able to launch a kayak on the beach there without difficulty or issue.  The same is true for more southern locations of the beach like Croatan (just south of Rudee inlet) and Sandbridge.
